I Was Always Hungry…
I was a little porky. Pudgy on the outside, but my insides were the problem. At 26, the doctor told me I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and that I needed to start watching my diet and exercising. Little did he know…I was dieting and exercising. Little did I know…I wasn’t dieting correctly.
More than that, though…
I was depressed. Not depressed over the way I looked…
Just depressed.
I would wake up with a cloud of sadness hanging over my head. Every morning. For years. I never took medication. Never. Looking back, I know that my depression had everything to do with bad eating habits that pushed harmful plaque into my brain’s blood vessels.
I trusted being “young” way too much…as if a young body couldn’t build up plaque in its arteries. Then the thought came: “If I was this unhealthy at 26, what would happen at 36, 46, or 56?”
As a Communication and Race scholar, I knew Black folks had been given the okey-dokey since slavery. I knew that Black folks had the highest rates of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer…precisely because of a history of bad dieting forced upon Africans. I knew I wanted to fight back. In order to resist centuries of racism, we need to create Black Health.
But my attempts to fix the problem with “good” diets actually made it worse since, like most people, I wasn’t addressing the real causes. I relied on meat, protein shakes, eggs, and a small daily salad…oh, and brown rice (because everyone said it was better than white) to fix my problems. I ramped up my physical training. I did 1.5 hours of weights, 3 times a week followed by 20 minutes of High intensity interval sprints. And…it worked…for a while.
But the moment I became too stressed in my PhD program or something happened at home…meals were the first things to go and weights were next. I always noticed my failure when I looked in the mirror. My weight fluctuated. My abs filed for divorce from my body, refusing to show themselves when I flexed in the mirror.
I didn’t know this then, but today, after testing diets personally and working with clients to drop weight, I know that meat, processed foods and rice do not help you lose weight and can actually make you fatter and fuel diabetes, high cholesterol, depression and even cancer.
And, by eating meat and rice … it’s too easy to stay hungry.
I was rarely full since I ate less to lose weight. What a mistake.
So I ended up grabbing a few extra chicken wings… for the “protein”,
A few extra cookies “in moderation”,
And I had cheat days…not cheat meals…filled with Pizza, General Taos Chicken, Greasy Burgers and fries, and everything else.
I told myself it was okay since I only ate out “on the weekends”.
Here’s the bottom line: Bad Diets Leave You Hungry!
Because I was so hungry from a whole week of non-plant eating, I made excuses to eat junk on the weekends.
Because I was so hungry…I ate too many calories on weekends and trained myself to eat junk food as “rewards” for a week of “hard work”.
Because I was so hungry…I failed to provide my body with key foods that would have helped me keep the fat off and protect me from disease.

Actually, the more junk food you eat, the hungrier you get and the more fat you store.
Here’s how this vicious cycle of hunger works…
The Fat from cheeseburgers, steak, and chicken are appetite stimulants. They make you hungry.
But did you know that inside the body, there is a network of chemoreceptors that line the digestive tract?
These receptors monitor how many nutrients are in every mouthful of food.
The hypothalamus in the brain receives this information and tells us if we should keep eating or not based on the amount of nutrients we’ve eaten, not the amount of food we’ve eaten.
In other words, if you don’t get enough nutrients, your brain will keep telling you to eat more even if you’ve already had two double cheeseburgers, a large fry and a medium coke.
You will gain weight trying to fill up on empty calories.
Plant nutrients are the solution.
Nutrients, including Fiber, fill you up so that you eat only as much as you need. Anything more runs the risk of raising your triglyceride levels, cholesterol, chances for atheromas and atherosclerosis, heart attacks and diabetes.
It’s simple: To be overweight is to consume too few nutrients.
Why?
Because people stop eating when they are full.
It takes a lot of processed foods and meat to give you that full feeling.
But it only takes a few of the right plant foods to do the same job.
By eating junk foods…even if only “on the weekends”…you are creating the conditions for more hunger.
…it’s because you need nutrients, not more food.

Trying out diets suck.
First, I tried a low fat, diet.
I saw some results…but eventually my body hit a wall and I could no longer drop fat down into the single digits. I spent months trying to figure out the specific combination of foods that matched my calorie needs.
So I then tried the “low carb” diet.
It worked for a while too…but then I found my workouts started to suffer…my energy was always low.
And I LOST MUSCLE.
So what could I do?
Low Carb & Low Fat diets didn’t work, but I knew that…
I couldn’t feel my best when I was always sucking my gut in at parties, when I was tired all the time, when my mind was cloudy and depressed, when I was spending all my time researching how to “burn fat and keep muscle”, when I was watching every little piece of food that entered my mouth, taking the top bun off cheeseburgers, ditching carbs, and trying to eat in “moderation”. These were recipes for disaster.
In the end, I learned…
…the body PREFERS to run off of carbohydrates. All the low-carb people have it wrong. Carbs aren’t the problem…junky processed carbs are the problem.
Carbs are essential to maintain energy and muscle size.
What I needed was better knowledge.

Q: Will You Work Around My Allergies? A: Absolutely we will! For example, for clients allergic to beans, I often substitute with a specialty fruit or a wild rice. I can find the right foods to substitute for nut allergies too!
Q: Can You Guarantee I lose Weight? A: This is the part where we’re supposed to say “there are no guarantees”…but we won’t. Yes, it is IMPOSSIBLE to have large stores of fat on your body and NOT lose weight as long as you complete the challenge perfectly. Period.
Q: Will I Cook often?? A: Not necessarily. There are some recipes that call for steaming or light cooking. Most meals do not require cooking of any sort but I have created a recipe list that will allow for healthy desserts, lunches and dinners that will require cooking and limited preparation. Some of my recipes require some cooking with oil…these recipes are to be used only once per week.
Q: Will I spend a lot of time preparing meals? A: Nope. You will not be spending hours preparing dinners. How long does it take to reach for an apple? How long does it take to make a salad? If you want to treat yourself, however, some of our recipes call for a bit more investment in time, but your general day to day eating will not require a lot of preparation. For example, if you decide to steam vegetables, we suggest steaming enough for a week at a time.

Q: Will I get enough amino acids to build muscle on this diet? A: Yes, you will! We like it when people work out during the 90 day challenge. While plants can give you enough amino acids on their own, we know some people want extra protection…we also include a bottle of amino acids to support muscle health and growth.
Q: Why only 90 Days? A: 90 Days is the minimum amount of time it takes to really change your habits and your taste buds by consistently exposing yourself to all natural plant foods.
